Donica WIllis is our Owner & Creative Director, She is an interdisciplinary artist & graphic designer based in Toronto, Ontario but born and raised in Preston, Nova Scotia. She is a Registered Graphic Designer (RGD) and holds a Master of Design (MDes). She works full-time at Toronto Metropolitan University as a Graphic & Web Designer and is the founder of The Blaqk Gold Project.
We asked Donica 21 questions, see what she said below!
1. What is the TLDR version of your life?
Got born, found art & design, went to school, got a career, opened a business, went to school again.
2. What is something that you have always wanted to try but never have?
I’ve always wanted to try rock climbing, but I am way too afraid of heights lol
3. What is your favourite place in the world and why?
My favourite place in the world is Halifax, Nova Scotia — I was born and raised there and most of my family and closest friends are still there. My favourite place is always with them.
4. What do you do for fun?
Usually my idea of fun is usually making or looking at art, playing basketball or some sort of physical activity or travelling.
5. What is your favourite TV show, movie, or book?
My favourite TV changes, but I think the most consistent favourite has been Martin. My favourite move is Save the Last Dance and I don’t think I have a favourite book.
6. What is one question you would ask the founder of Nike if you could?
What is your creative process/approach to creating new products and/or services?
7. What do you value more than anything else?
I value time more than anything else, You can get just about anything else in life back but you cannot get time back.
8. What is your idea of a good time?
Positive vibes ad energy always make anything feel like a good time for me. This could be with friends, colleagues, strangers, whoever. As long as the vibes and energy is there, it’s a good time for me.
9. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Los Angeles — I’ve had the biggest crush on LA for the longest time and have been there the most i’ve been anywhere.
10. What is your favourite sports team?
I don’t have one.
11. What do you like most about art?
Its subjectivity and ability to tell stories.
12. If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
Invest the money you made from working part-time jobs while you were in high school instead of buying clothes, food, etc.
13. What would you put on your own personal billboard?
Art is the answer
14. What do you spend too much time thinking about?
I spend a lot of time thinking about my next goal/move. Instead of embracing the moment and the current wins in my life I often automatically shift focus to what’s next. A blessing and a curse.
15. What is one possession you can’t live without?
I cannot live without my computer to be honest lol 90% of my life is centred around it.
16. If you had unlimited money or time, what would you do?
Travel and give back to my community in Nova Scotia.
17. What is your favourite thing about working at DW Creativ?
My favourite thing is being able to choose what projects and people to work with. There is just something special about being able to be in full control over choosing to collaborate with organizations and companies who’s values align with yours.
18. What do you do when you are feeling really down?
I create art.
19. What is your favourite photo that you took?
I don’t think I have one.
20. What is one thing you have always wanted to accomplish?
I’ve always wanted to open a creative facility where youth can come to learn creative practices.
21. What is the most important thing you have learned?
You cannot and will not ever be able to please everyone.
